Should there be term limits for people who are deployed into the service especially war times like we are in now?

We were talking today about the soldier who due to stress killed five other soldiers in a psychological counseling center in Baghdad and the reason why was because he was deployed a third time. It was stated he had post-traumatic stress disorder.

Do you know if that soldier was assessed before being sent again?

Evidently there should be some form of assessment, knowing what we know of post-traumatic stress.
Maybe the practice of assessing exists, is well-established but isn't efficient enough or they thought he could bear with what he'd be exposed to over there, even if he had been found slightly unfit.

I'm for time limits, which would decrease for soldiers found unfit for duty.
I suppose such a thing exists but we've heard about post-traumatic stress among many soldiers. They don't always get a discharge.

Are they not being screened correctly or are some of them deliberately sent back even if they are troubled but can still function- abeit not without problems?

Or both?

In any case, a fit soldier should be able to serve as long as he or she is fit. I would suppose, anyway...

admittedly I haven't given this enough thought...

US Sergeant John Russell stationed out of Hamburg Germany had been under psychological counseling and was ordered to undergo more when he decided to shoot five soldiers who were in a couseling center at the time. Russell was hoping to go home after being deployed at least twice.

One service man on the news commented that Russell flipped out when he heard he had to serve another term in the service just prior to going in days before and shooting these men.

This person should have said "I think Russell needs some major help."

Ofan I think as you say it depends on the mentality of an individual.

One gentleman in our group said he remembers he was stationed on a submarine. He was not in any war times. And a few times they were in this submarine for long periods of time. Well being locked up in a confided space is daunting for many people. He said there were two guys who after being home for awhile came back to get in the submarine and when the submarine closed its doors. They went crazy. And was screaming and clawing fellow mates to get out.

They had minor counseling around six months provided by the service and eventually both of them were discharged. He said one of them committed suicide later and another one finally had to get some major counseling on his own and pay for it too.

Whew! I can understand he flipped out (not condoning the killing, just saying I can understand someone mentally shaky could flip...)

A yellow dog named Laia will be leaving Iraq today where she will be flying to the US to stay at a specific families home. The home belongs to friends of Major Steven Hutchison who was killed in may by a roadside bomb three months prior to finishing his term and returning to Scottsdale Arizona.
Hutchinson adopted the dog with the help of SPCA international Operational Bagdad Pups. Hutchinson was considered the oldest combat death at 61 from Iraq and Afghanistan. He had a PHD in psychology and was a decorate war veteran from Vietnam.
Steven Hutchison wanted to do something after the September 11 attacks but his wife stopped him. He rejoined after his wife died of cancer in 2006. He leaves behind two grown daughters.
He found the dog when she was one month old and the vet said he would have to put her too sleep unless they adopted her as their mascot. As a policy you are not suppose to adopt pets as a soldier but Hutchinson defied orders to get rid of her and moved her from base to base and kept her hidden.
Hutchinson was caught and was suppose to be punished before his death even a high ranked official as a major. One person said he was going to be punished for disobeying the laws of the service; he was a stubborn old goat."
